Polymer Adhesives Offer Solution for Plastics Industry
Bonding polyolefins, especially elastomers, is an ongoing problem in plastics assembly. A Quebec-based company had developed a process that appears to overcome some of the problems using a primer adhesive combination.
Joseph Selim, a 20-year veteran of the plastics industry, started Polymer Engineering in 1996. While he has other product lines, Maxi-Coat and Maxi-Bond formulations are where he plans to focus his sales efforts.
"The problem with bonding things like TPEs and TRPs is that there's no oxygen available in the polymer to form the bonds with a conventional adhesive," he says. "The coating of primer produces oxygen through a reaction with the polymer and our specially formulated adhesive will then bond the parts."
Formulations vary according to the material. The percentage of olefin in the polymer has a direct effect on what recipe is needed.
"We can formulate the coating in Pantone colors if necessary," he says. "We have our own lab in Cornwall as well a production facility of our own, so we don't have to use outside suppliers."
Launching the company and developing the product line has been expensive, but he says it is paying off.
Clients with unusual applications are finding he can help, and he is lining up distributors in the U.S. One application involved a customer trying to adhere an ABS part to metal.
Selim was able to develop primers that enabled one adhesive to hold the two parts.
